I’m still experimenting with poetry, and I’ve always wondered how long poems should be. Poe talked about the beauty and effectiveness of poetry and its shortness of length, and the effect. Wallace Stevens wrote mostly short poems to my knowledge. I remember reading Poe in class and wishing some of his writing was shorter. But that was just his stories mostly. Those things were long. I guess the poems should really be short enough to read in a single sitting and not take too long, even with re-reading it. I’m trying to work on my poems being short, but sometimes the words flow into something longer, which I think is okay for first drafts. You can always go back and edit something later, which I love about writing. The editing process is tedious, sometimes grueling, but overall necessary.
